EPC Engineering Consulting GmbH (Germany) as general contractor supplies all pieces of equipment for the sodium cyanide facility. This plant meets the highest environmental standards worldwide and operates to the one-of-its-kind technology developed by Evonik Röhm / CyPlus GmbH, Germany, the licensor in this case, who is also a global market leader in sodium cyanide production. Not only do products from Evonik Röhm /CyPlus satisfy the highest requirements for ecological safety and safety for industrial plants, they also show the way ahead to new global standards and minimized operating costs (own power supply through an exhaust gas reactor). Currently, worldwide only two facilities are operating to these technologies, and among them are none in Russia or in the CIS.
The principal customer base for sodium cyanide is gold mining industry. At present, there are only two manufacturers of sodium cyanide in Russia, namely Saratovorgsintez LLC (production since 2007) and Korund in Dzerzhinsk (a member of KORUND group) that started production in August 1941 and was, until recently, the only manufacturer of cyanide in Russia. Korund Cyan intends to initiate the second phase of the project in 2012 – 2013 and raise the production capacity to 80.000 metric tons per year. As a result, the Russian gold mining facilities can operate without imported sodium cyanide. Said product is also exported to some customers in the former USSR.
